The Wonders of RSS

If you've been on the internet for a long time, you might already know about RSS feeds. Maybe you think they're obsolete, or maybe you love using one. Maybe you've seen the term and icon before, but never actually found out what it means.
I had seen RSS feed buttons before over the years, but when I clicked on them occasionally it wouldn't explain anything, or redirect me to a new website. It would either just ask if I want to download a file, or bring me to a page full of weird text.

I've recently learned what to do with those options, and now I'm obsessed!

An RSS feed (RSS stands for: Really Simple Syndication) is a file that exists on some websites that is updated whenever something new like blog posts, articles, videos, podcasts, etc. are added to the website.

Which sounds... okay. Like what's the point to it, right? But! The point is if you download an RSS Feed Reader, and add an RSS feed link, it will automatically check the website for updates for you!

There's tons of free readers out there. Some of them can be hooked into your email, but the one I use is just a browser extension called FeedBro!

You might be thinking it's kind of pointless nowadays with social media, which yes social media allows for you get updates from different accounts quickly and easily. But for those who don't use standard social media much, or just want an alternate way to receive updates on things, this could be really useful! It also cuts out the endless scroll of most social media, instead only showing you what websites you've added and nothing else.

Most news sites have RSS options, so you can quickly and easily keep up with things!

Some social media sites also have RSS options! Those that I know of are: tumblr, Youtube, Bluesky, Mastodon, WebToons, and Reddit. (If you look this up, you might see other people list twitter as an option. Unfortunately sometime when twitter turned into x, the RSS feed option was removed :( )

I had a hard time starting to use one at first, because I couldn't think of any website to add. Now though, I've got a small collection and will add some of them here to give people a head start on setting up their own! (If you want to look at these sites like normal, just take off the "/rss" or "/feed")
